Glubet Gut ® (Metformin HCl)


General Description Child 10-17 years (specialist use only): Initially 500 mg twice daily with meals. After the child has taken metformin for about 2 weeks, the doctor may measure the blood sugar and increase to 850 mg twice daily. Maximum daily dose: 2000 mg. Adults: Initially 500 mg twice daily or 850 mg once daily. After taking for about 2 weeks your doctor may measure your blood sugar and increase to 850 or 1000 mg twice daily. Maximum daily dose: 2550 mg. Polycystic ovary syndrome in adults: 1500-2000 mg daily in 2-3 divided doses. Antipsychotic-induced weight gain in adults: 500-2550 mg daily, administered in 2-3 divided doses for up to 6 month.
Side Effects Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Abdominal pain, anorexia, diarrhea, nausea, taste disturbance, vomiting, decreased vitamin-B12 absorption, erythema, lactic acidosis, pruritus, urticarial, megaloblastic anaemia

Warnings Determine renal function before treatment and at least twice a year in patients with additional risk factors for renal impairment. -Stop metformin treatment prior to intravascular administration of iodinated contrast agents can cause renal failure (Visipaque, Omnipaque, Scanlux, Ultravist); restart no earlier than 48 hours after the test if renal function has returned to baseline. -Avoid use of alcohol during take of metformin. -Stop metformin treatment 48 hours before surgery and use of general anaesthesia and restart when renal function returns to baseline. -If metformin in some patients cause lactic acidosis, rapidly go to doctor. Sypmtom of this condition are: stomach pain, fast and deep breathing, sleepness or unusual fruity odour to breath, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, feeling cold, feeling weak and tired. Use with caution in patients with diabetic coma and ketoacidosis, severe infection, trauma, renal impairment, dehydration, hypoxia, acute heart failure, recent myocardial infraction, excessive alcohol intake, hepatic impairment and in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
